The SAGEM myW-7 features 3G/UMTS providing data transmission speeds that deliver a smoother Internet experience and faster email and MMS-photo exchange, together with high-speed music and video download power.

- Video telephony: The SAGEM myW-7 uses two onboard cameras to graft video onto voice communication. It can even switch seamlessly between cameras to change the viewpoint: another of the reasons why SAGEM myW-7 is gifted with ubiquity. The large display (176 x 220 pixels, 256k colours) provides high-fidelity rendering of the images captured through the VGA-resolution (300k pixels) video-call dedicated camera, faithfully conveying the users expressions and emotions.

- Live TV: now that the SAGEM myW-7 features video streaming from multimedia servers, you can watch TV while you’re on the move, just like in the films!

- Integrated 3G UMTS modem: the SAGEM myW-7 can be connected to a laptop or desktop computer and serve as a mobile modem, which means you can use your computer to browse the Internet even when you’re not at home!

- Manage your emails: the SAGEM myW-7 can be synchronised to the majority of web-based e-mail services.

- Data downloads: the data speeds generated by 3G UMTS networks enable the SAGEM myW-7 to download video clips, music, ring-tones, photos and other files in a matter of seconds, and in a wide range of formats!

Samsung’s SGH-Z710 is an impressively compact clamshell. Its high-resolution display measures up nicely, as does video calling and the capabilities of its 3.2 Megapixel camera. The music player is not the best one around- but with the right price tag and given broad availability, the SGH-Z710 could very well become one of this summer’s best-selling handsets.

As Samsung’s first 3.2 Megapixel camera phone for the European market, the SGH-Z710 focuses primarly on imaging but also includes a raft of other high-end features such as 3G connectivity, a music player and a stereo FM radio. A swivel clamshell, the handset incorporates both an external 1.1-inch display and an internal 2.15-inch, 262K colour display, initiating camera mode through a sequence of opening the flip, rotating 180 degrees and closing the flip to allow for the largest display to function as a viewfinder for the autofocus-enabled camera.

Other highlights include 128 MB of on-board memory and a microSD slot for memory expansion, as well as USB connectivity, Bluetooth and a file viewer for Microsoft Office document formats.

Weighing in at 107 g, the SGH-Z710 is also slated for an arrival later this summer and, as with the SGH-i320, currently bears no price tag.

The SGH-Z310 is similar to Z330 but has a weaker camera (1 megapixel), slightly bigger internal display (2.0″ 176 x 220 pixels with 262K colors) and less memory (50 MB) but with a microSD slot. British users are not interested in third generation (3G) mobile phones and find interactive services difficult to use, according to a survey conducted by YouGov for Netonomy. These are the disturbing stats:

  • 73% of those with 3G phones rarely use 3G services
  • 28% of those with 3G phones never use 3G services at all
  • 79% believe mobile phone services are becoming more complicated

Probably more worrying for network operators, who have invested billions in 3G licences and technology, is the small number of consumers planning to upgrade. Only eight per cent of respondents told Netonomy that they were thinking of moving to 3G, although the number had doubled on the year before.

‘While there has been an increase since we asked the same question a year ago, real consumer demand for 3G is still low.’ However, the number of people who believe 3G is easy to use increased on the year before - rising from 45 to 47 per cent.
