Reg Hardware reports that Vodafone has responded to calls from MacBook and MacBook Pro owners for a compatible version of its 3G Mobile Connect Broadband Datacard with a USB version of the gadget which it pledged to ship in the autumn.

Vodafone’s HSDPA-equipped Mobile Connect 3G Datacard does feature Mac support, but since it’s a PC Card device, it’s not compatible with the MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks, which use the new ExpressCard 34 slot for add-ins.

RegHardware reports that the next generation of Intel’s Centrino platform, codenamed ‘Santa Rosa’, may well include 3G mobile phone network connectivity as well as the standard Wi-Fi, if allegedly leaked company roadmaps are to be believed.

… the Santa Rosa specification includes ‘Windigo’, the Centrino platform’s first wireless wide-area network (WWAN) add-in. The report claims Windigo will host GSM, GPRS and WCDMA/CDMA2000 connectivity, but cites no sources for this information. You might expect Intel to be pushing WiMAX rather than 3G, so we wouldn’t rule this technology out as an alternative foundation for Windigo.

Mobile phone TV (DMB) will be available at all twelve venues of the World Cup in Germany this summer, but whether any viewers will be tuning in is another matter.

Although major supplier Samsung Electronics earlier this year unveiled a terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) phone, the first of its kind for commercial services in Europe, the Korean company decided to delay manufacturing and shipping while it awaited the outcome of a complicated license allocation process in Germany, which is still not completed, according to German news service Heise Online.

British users are not interested in third generation (3G) mobile phones and find interactive services difficult to use, according to a survey conducted by YouGov for Netonomy. These are the disturbing stats:

  • 73% of those with 3G phones rarely use 3G services
  • 28% of those with 3G phones never use 3G services at all
  • 79% believe mobile phone services are becoming more complicated

Probably more worrying for network operators, who have invested billions in 3G licences and technology, is the small number of consumers planning to upgrade. Only eight per cent of respondents told Netonomy that they were thinking of moving to 3G, although the number had doubled on the year before.

‘While there has been an increase since we asked the same question a year ago, real consumer demand for 3G is still low.’ However, the number of people who believe 3G is easy to use increased on the year before - rising from 45 to 47 per cent.
